Programme Note
PLEASE NOTE THAT IN VIEW OF THE CURRENT SITUATION, THIS CONCERT HAS BEEN POSTPONED. WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ON 12 NOVEMBER!
Ad Libitum Choir, with soloists and orchestra, are proud to present two of the greatest choral masterpieces of the Baroque era.
Bach's Magnificat, a lively setting of Mary's response to the Annunciation by the angel Gabriel, is a challenging and exhilarating showcase of structural and musical word-setting, the first large-scale choral work that Bach composed after his appointment in Leipzig in 1723.
The exuberant Dixit Dominus is a psalm setting written by Handel soon after he had moved to Rome at the age of only 22. It shows the influences of colourful Italian music and is full of dramatic intensity. Handel later made his permanent home in London and is known to have played the organ at St Katharine Cree, the historic City church in which this concert takes place.
We look forward to welcoming you to this evening of stunning vocal and orchestral music.
