Programme Note
On Saturday 23rd November Banbury Symphony Orchestra will play three major romantic works from the 19th century.
Carl Maria von Weber is considered the father of German romantic opera. His opera ‘Der Freischütz‘ (‘The Marksman‘) was premiered in 1821, and has been described as the most expressive rendering of the gruesome in a musical score.
Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor is rightly one of the most popular piano concertos in the repertoire. Our soloist will be the wonderful Madalina Rusu, returning to play once again with the orchestra. Her performance of the Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No 2 with the orchestra in November 2017 was a complete sell-out!
After the interval, we will perform Anton Bruckner’s powerful Sixth Symphony. Bruckner himself considered it his “boldest symphony” and critics have commented on its “plethora of tender, memorable themes”.
