Programme Note
Despite the horrors and destruction of the Great War, London remained a global centre for culture in the 1920s, especially classical music. But with the political landscape irreversibly transformed, many artists came to the city burdened with feelings of austerity and doubt, and sought distance from the dogmas and traditions of the Old World.
Join Australian pianist Nicholas Young in reliving this intriguing period of history through the solo piano music of three international composers – the London-born Arnold Bax, Australian Roy Agnew and Italian-German Ferruccio Busoni – who pursued vastly different careers but were commonly active in London during the interwar decades. To celebrate the 150th birth anniversary year of Busoni, the recital concludes with Busoni's arrangement of Bach's Chaconne from the Second Violin Partita, a perennial favourite.
