Programme Note

Cellist Laura Peribáñez and pianist Siqian Li present a programme featuring two short pieces and two major works from the cello and piano repertoire, all interconnected with the theme of romantic voice.

Vocalise, one of Rachmaninoff's most recognised compositions, was originally written for wordless singing, similar to Villa-Lobos' Cantilena, which employs the same 'vocalise' technique.

Beethoven's 7 Variations based on 'Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen', taken from one of the duets of Pamina and Papageno in
The Magic Flute, and Rachmaninoff's majestic Sonata for cello and piano, will be presented as the focal repertoire of the concert.  Beyond its musical splendour, this latter work establishes a romantic thread that ties together the entire concert programme.
