Programme Note
The Mahler Piano Series features a wide variety of musical styles that influenced Mahler, as well as the bulk of his symphonic music arranged for solo piano.
Acclaimed pianist, composer and arranger Iain Farrington explores the European musical melting pot of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Featuring exceptional singers performing in an intimate salon venue from the period, this is a unique and remarkable exploration of Mahler’s musical world.
New Beginnings
In the final concert of this series, several of Mahler's brilliant contemporaries are featured: the young prodigy Korngold, the trailblazer Schoenberg and the futurist Busoni. Wagner's music was always central to Mahler's work and was to influence his final piece, the Tenth Symphony. Although unfinished at the time of his death, Mahler's sketches for the Symphony provide a complete score, unorchestrated and essentially in piano form. The Symphony will be performed in a full piano version, a fitting and moving culmination to Mahler's output.
Iain Farrington
Iain has an exceptionally busy and diverse career as a pianist, composer and arranger. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London and at Cambridge University. Iain has performed as a soloist, accompanist and chamber musician at all the major UK venues, as well as in the USA, Japan, South Africa, Malaysia, Hong Kong and all across Europe. He performed at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics with Rowan Atkinson, the London Symphony Orchestra and Sir Simon Rattle. Iain has worked with many of the country's leading musicians, including Willard White, Lesley Garrett, Paul McCartney and gives frequent broadcasts on BBC Radio Three. He has composed orchestral, choral and instrumental pieces, including several orchestral works for the BBC Proms. Iain has arranged hundreds of works in many styles, including opera, instrumental and choral, African songs, cabaret, klezmer, jazz and pop. His chamber orchestrations of the symphonic repertoire (including much Mahler) are regularly performed around the world, and he has arranged and performed all of Elgar's symphonies on the piano.
Fenella Humphreys
Winner of the BBC Music Magazine 2018 Instrumental Award, violinist Fenella Humphreys enjoys a diverse and busy career combining concerto performances, solo recitals and chamber music. Performances have taken her around the world to venues including the Wigmore Hall, the South Bank Centre, and the new Helsinki Music Centre. She has broadcast for the BBC, Classic FM, DeutschlandRadio Berlin, West-Deutsche-Rundfunk, ABC Classic FM (Australia) and Korean radio, and performed the Walton Concerto at the composer’s home at the invitation of the Walton Trust in a performance that was recorded by Canadian TV.
Fenella has won great acclaim for her project Bach to the Future, a set of 6 newly commissioned unaccompanied violin works set alongside Bach's music. She has performed it numerous times across the UK and recorded it on two critically acclaimed CDs, both receiving BBC Music Magazine's Instrumental disc of the month. The second won the BBC Music Magazine 2018 Instrumental Award and was also Editor's Choice in Gramophone Magazine. Fenella is a passionate chamber musician, enjoying performances with Ensemble Perpetuo, Counterpoise and I Musicanti as well as collaborations with artists including Alexander Baillie, Adrian Brendel, Pekka Kuusisto, Alec Frank-Gemmill and Martin Lovett.
