Programme Note
The City of Sounds festival takes place over eight weeks in May and June of this year, marking the closure and subsequent demolition of Birmingham Conservatoire's Adrian Boult Hall, affectionately known as the ABH. It is an invitation to remember, to celebrate and to look to the future of Birmingham's rich music scene.
South of the Line, our concert tonight, forms part of our forthcoming recording of the music of John Joubert who celebrates his 90th birthday in 2017, the year that the recording will be released. Joubert has been a distinguished part of Birmingham's musical landscape since 1962 when he joined the Music Department of Birmingham University.
This concert then will give you, our audience, a sneak preview of some of the works ahead of us being recorded. It will conclude with South of the Line, a cantata in five scenes to poems by Thomas Hardy. It was performed as part of the opening of the Adrian Boult Hall in 1985 so it is a fitting tribute that it will be heard again as part of its closing.
Interestingly, and rather poignantly perhaps, the last sounds to be heard in the ABH, after the City of Sounds festival has finished, will be our recording.
