Programme Note

Originally intended for performance in the vast gothic splendour of Cologne Cathedral, this masterpiece endows the music of spirituality and devotion with the scale and expressive power of the symphony. Regarded by Beethoven as his greatest work, it is also deeply personal - 'From the heart - may it in turn go to the heart.'

The concert brings together magnificent forces - a 200-strong choir with full symphony orchestra - in a rare live performance of this unforgettable work.
