Programme Note

Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz is one of the most popular concert pieces and Nottingham Philharmonic Orchestra is  delighted to be playing it on Sunday 13th October at 3pm in the Albert Hall in Nottingham.  It is the first concert of an exciting season which includes The Planets in November and a trip round the world in January.

In October we are also playing an orchestral work by Rodriguez, famous for his guitar concerto, who died twenty years ago in 1999.  The title of this tone poem, in English is For the Flower of the Blue Lily, based on a medieval Spanish legend, and with the orchestration including harp and full percussion it should be a powerful work.

Also in 1999, the Manchester-based composer Adam Gorb wrote his clarinet concerto for Nicholas Cox and the RLPO.  It has two inspirations – the music of Gustav Mahler and Jewish folk music.  We are honoured to have Nicholas Cox, for whom it was written, to play it with us.
