Programme Note

The first concert of the new season for Nottingham Philharmonic Orchestra is at 3.00pm on a Sunday, so parking is easy and it will be daylight.   Our concert starts the season forcefully with two symphonies and a horn concerto.

Beethoven's 5th Symphony has the well-known opening phrase, and throughout is tuneful and lively.  BBC Young Musician finalist Ben Goldscheider brings youth and vitality to the Strauss second Horn Concerto which is a glorious work.   And the other Fifth Symphony, this time by Danish composer Carl Nielsen brings dramatic music with manic side-drum at one point and a beautiful clarinet solo winning through the battle!  A piece worth hearing but rarely played.

Soloist Ben Goldscheider
