Programme Note

Our 50th birthday season opens with Mahler’s epic hymn to nature, life and all of God’s creation. Not often performed because of the huge forces required, it is sure to get our season off to a spectacular start.   We  have a huge symphony orchestra with extra forces, including eight horns, extra off-stage brass, 4 of each section in the wind, 2 harps, lots of percussion and strings, as well as alto soloist, women’s choir and a boys choir.  Nottingham Philharmonic Orchestra will be joined by Sarah Winn (RNCM), ladies choir Mirabile Vocal Ensemble and boys from Nottingham High School for this marvellous symphony.

The symphony has 6 movements and was described by Mahler as "A summer's midday dream". His narrative for the work gives each movement a title:

I Pan Awakes, Summer marches in
II What the flowers in the meadow tell me
III What the animals in the forest tell me
IV What man tells me
V What the angels tell me
VI What love tells me
