Programme Note
The first concert of Nottingham Philharmonic Orchestra’s new season, titled A Symphony of London will be a celebration of some of the best music composed at the beginning of the 20th Century in Britain. We feature the magnificent Violin Concerto by Edward Elgar with soloist Callum Smart, and Elgar’s Cockaigne Overture, which depicts a lively and colourful portrait of Edwardian London. Other music with a London theme includes Percy Grainger’s popular Handel in the Strand, and Westminster, the second movement from Eric Coates’ London Suite. Holst wrote Hammersmith, a Prelude and Scherzo originally for military band and later rewrote it for full orchestra. It reflects his affection for this area of London and his walks by the River Thames.
Come and enjoy a concert with beautiful melodies and lively rhythms on an autumn Sunday afternoon.
