Programme Note

American jazz and dance provide the backbone of the programme with lively music by Gershwin, Bernstein and Rodgers.  Samuel Barber's Symphony is quite short, and as attractive as you would expect from the composer of the Adagio for Strings.  The trumpet concerto by British composer Richard Rodney Bennett is a jazz-influenced work of both beauty and energy, that should be heard more often!
