Northern Lights

Add to my Calendar 19-03-2023 15:30 19-03-2023 17:30 36 Northern Lights ‘Northern Lights’ This afternoon we will be exploring one of the most remarkable regions of European music. Scandinavia has produced some of Europe’s greatest composers and today we start our journey in Denmark, with Nielsen, its best known composer.  The ‘Fantasy Journey to the Faroe Islands’ was commissioned for a Faroese gala so gave Nielsen the opportunity to include lots of Faroese folk melodies to help depict the journey across the sea, the seabirds calling and the party on the islands at the end of the journey.  Next we journey to Iceland with Johansson, a little known composer, and his beautiful ‘Adagio’ which incorporates his love of the string sound, punctuated by celeste and piano.  And then to arguably the most well known of the Scandinavian composers, Grieg, whose Norwegian Dances exude joy and demonstrate so wonderfully the Nationalist style Grieg wrote in so well.  His love for his country is evident, as like Nielsen, he uses folk songs as the basis for his melodies.  We finish this afternoon’s journey with Sibelius and his 3 movement symphony No.5.  It is hard not to imagine yourself in the middle of the Finnish countryside, looking in wonder at the majestic scenery that the country boasts and not feeling uplifted by such a truly wonderful piece of music – a fantastic end to our afternoon of music from Northern Europe.
