Programme Note

Following its highly successful celebration of Ronald Corp's 65th birthday at the Royal Festival Hall in March, Highgate Choral Society completes its 2015-2016 season with what is generally regarded as one of the supreme achievements of classical music, the Mass in B minor by Johann Sebastian Bach.

It was composed in four sections over several years and there is still much scholarly debate as to whether it was ever intended to be performed complete. Certainly Bach himself never heard it performed in one sitting and it was not until 1859, more than a century after his death, that the work was first heard it its entirety.
