Programme Note

We are delighted to present a lighter programme of music for our Spring Concert this year with the emphasis on the old but with a modern twist. George Shearing, known primarily as a jazz pianist, wrote music for 7 short Songs and Sonnets using words from Shakespeare. Some a capella, others with piano accompaniment, they contain exciting and close harmonies throughout.

John Rutter has taken traditional English, Irish and Scottish folk songs in his suite entitled The Sprig of Thyme where familiar melodies are shared between different parts of a mixed choir to give a new approach to well known songs such as The Bold Grenadier and Afton Water.

The final choir item is the toe tapping tongue twisting song from Sweet Charity by Cy Coleman, The Rhythm of Life.

To complete the evening, we are pleased to welcome back the Kaleidoscope String Quartet with an interlude of instrumental music in each half. From Greensleeves to Eleanor Rigby there is sure to be something to suit all musical tastes.
