Programme Note
This concert features music from two classic films. The Clarinet Concerto by Mozart is heard in the opening sequence of ‘Out of Africa’ with Meryl Streep and Robert Redford, and the 7th Symphony of Beethoven accompanies Colin Firth’s famous march to the radio microphone in ‘The King’s Speech’.
Two internationally renowned musicians will be taking part. Concerto soloist Robert Plane is in Sheffield’s Ensemble 360, and has been principal clarinettist with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, CBSO and Royal Northern Sinfonia.
The concert will be conducted by Laurence Perkins, who as a solo and orchestral bassoonist has worked with some of the world’s top conductors, with two of his recordings reaching No. 4 in the U.K. Classical Charts.
The programme will also include the wonderfully evocative overture ‘The Hebrides’ by Mendelssohn, creating a musical picture of the beautiful islands off the west coast of Scotland.
