In My Heart’s Comfort, The Ripieno Choir, with continuo, returns to the masterful talents of Bach and Schütz to explore the comfort of music in the face of mortality. JS Bach’s Jesu Meine Freude takes us on a musical journey through images of shelter, storm and fear towards a growing inner strength and resilience. Johann Christoph Bach uses subtly changing harmonies in Es ist nun aus mit meinem Leben to give the gentle melody a direction towards release. Finally, Schütz’s Musikalische Exequien paints comfort as shelter and belonging in both the earthly community and heavenly company. He combines the intimacy of smaller ensembles with the warmth of the full choir, to create an ambience that grows with expressions of light, life and joy.
