Programme Note
The concert, ‘For All The Saints’, has been scheduled to celebrate All Saints’ Day with music and texts written by, or dedicated to, various saints, many of whom are richly depicted on the rood screen in the church.
The first half of the programme is a wide selection of European sacred music, chosen primarily for its direct relevance to All Saints through its texts. Exeter Festival Chorus singers will show their linguistic versatility, singing the pieces in the original language in which they were set: English, Latin or German. The vocal pieces are sung either a cappella or accompanied by the piano. Notable inclusions are Brahms' Geistliches Lied and Purcell's Soul of the world, taken from his Ode to St.Cecilia. The first half concludes with the opportunity to sing Vaughan Williams' setting of the hymn For All The Saints.
After refreshments, you will hear Charpentier's Messe De Minuit Pour Noël. This beautiful work is an inspired and masterful blend of melodies from traditional French carols and new music composed by Charpentier.
