Beethoven composed his Violin Concerto in D major for violinist Franz Clement. Its first performance was largely unsuccessful and for some decades the work languished in obscurity, until revived in 1844 by Joseph Joachim. Since then it has become one of the best-known violin concertos. The programe is a celebration of Beethoven, also including Beethoven's Overture for Heinrich Joseph von Collin's 1804 tragedy Coriolan, and his Symphony no 7. Beethoven was noted as remarking that the Synphony no 7 was one of his best works at its première. The second movement, Allegretto, was the most popular movement and prompted an encore.
