Programme Note
Verdi composed his mighty Requiem in honour of the great Italian poet and novelist Manzoni who died in 1873 following an accident. The work was first performed at St Mark's Church in Milan on 22 May 1874 to a rapturous reception. It has been described as 'an opera in ecclesiastical robes' and was intended for the concert hall rather than the church.
The Royal Tunbridge Wells Choral Society perform this powerful work for the first concert of their 117th season. They are joined by the RTWCS Orchestra and four professional soloists under the expert baton of musical director Robyn Sevastos.
