Programme Note
Ailyn Perez and Stephen Costello, two young American singers – now dubbed 'America’s fastest-rising husband-and-wife opera stars' (Associated Press) – bring a spectcular chemistry to the stage.
The couple met at Philadelphia’s Academy of Vocal Arts, where an onstage romance in Puccini’s most beloved operaLa Boheme kindled the flames of a real-life passion. Perez’s sparkling, energetic and passionate persona and Costello’s romantic, charismatic and charming nature have made them both international opera stars in their own right, and this season they appear together across the globe.
'In Ailyn Pérez’s Juliet and Stephen Costello’s Romeo we easily see the Bard’s impetuous, enraptured young lovers, but more importantly we hear a fullness and warmth in their voices that make Gounod’s opulent lines soar.' San Diego Arts
