Programme Note

Faith, betrayal, tragedy and redemption: all of human emotion pulses through the notes of Johann Sebastian Bach’s St John Passion.

For millions, Bach’s mighty choral retelling of the Passion of Jesus Christ is one of the supreme masterpieces of western art. But it’s also an intensely
emotional human drama, and one that never gets any less urgent.

Musicians live to perform Bach – and in music as powerful as this, the expert players of AAM have a very special insight to share. ‘Rare and rich’ was how The Times described the result when we performed it in 2022, but Laurence Cummings knows that any performance is nothing unless it touches both heart and soul. Today, with six outstanding soloists, we aim to do nothing less.
