Programme Note
Vassily Sinaisky brings the full weight of authority of the Russian conducting tradition to work with Guildhall musicians in one of the greatest and most sombre of Russian works – Shostakovich’s devastating Tenth Symphony, written shortly after the death of Stalin. The mood is offset by Dvořák’s effervescent Eighth Symphony.
