Programme Note

In the first concert of the academic year, new Guildhall School musicians perform together for the first time on the Barbican Hall stage in an eclectic programme of orchestral, choral and jazz works.

The evening begins with Rachmaninov’s epic choral symphony The Bells, featuring a new English translation by Stephen Plaice and showcasing the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Head of Opera Dominic Wheeler.

For the second half of the concert Guildhall Jazz musicians and singers take to the stage for a programme including a jazz orchestra arrangement of Gershwin’s famous Rhapsody in Blue, plus selections from Duke Ellington's Sacred Concerts – described by the composer as “the most important thing I have ever done”.
