Helix Ensemble in Bingham

Concert masterpieces for string orchestra

Add to my Calendar 24-09-2022 19:30 24-09-2022 21:30 36 Helix Ensemble in Bingham Under its Musical Director David Greed, Helix Ensemble marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ralph Vaughan Williams by performing his Oboe Concerto with soloist Philip Haworth, the only wind player in an otherwise all-strings programme.  The Concerto was inspired by the legendary Leon Goossens and dates from 1944, when RVW was 72 and still astonishingly creative. It is preceded by the Concerto for Double String Orchestra by Michael Tippett, an exhilarating work characterized by its rhythmic energy and beautiful melodies.  It was finished in 1939 in the decade after his second period at the Royal College of Music, where he studied counterpoint, learning to write fugues in the style of Bach, and received tuition in orchestration under Gordon Jacob.  Both elements proved central to what eventually became Tippett's distinctive style. The concert ends with Tchaikovsky’s powerful and beautiful Serenade for Strings, written in 1880; a masterpiece of string writing and regarded by Tchaikovsky as one of his finest works. We are welcomed by the Bingham Arts group BCAC who are providing refreshments. Tickets cost £11 for adults in advance and £12 on the door, including free refreshments.  Accompanied children are free.  Tickets are obtainable from Steven Halls, at stevenhalls@hotmail.com or telephone 07900 162170 Bingham Parish Church, Nottingham DD/MM/YYYY
