Programme Note

Will Todd’s Mass in Blue is a modern choral classic – a dynamic, uplifting, and highly popular jazz setting of the Latin mass. The work features driving grooves and blues harmonies, brilliant choral writing and great moments of musical interplay between soprano soloist and choir.

Our concert opens with extracts from Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concerts, before the world premiere of Lillie Harris’s setting of Chaucer’s ‘Now welcome, somer’, for choir and saxophone, and a beautiful setting of an Icelandic psalm by Anna Thorvaldsdottir.

We are joined by soprano Lorna James, together with pianist Christopher Pulleyn and a brilliant team of jazz musicians from Gordon Tetley Big Band.

Jazz, Blues, Funk, Bebop with a Classical Choir, Big Band and a World Premiere Performance
