Celtic Connections

Add to my Calendar 08-06-2018 19:30 08-06-2018 21:30 36 The High Sheriff of Bristol's 2018 Concert The High Sheriff’s concert is an annual highlight in the city’s calendar, raising money for Bristol Youth and Community Action (BYCA) and for the Bristol Cathedral Trust.  The concert has a Celtic theme, featuring some of the most evocative sounds of Cornwall and Wales, reflecting our family, roots and heritage.   Internationally renowned harpist Catrin Finch is one of the most accomplished harpists of her generation, delighting audiences across the UK and worldwide. She will perform works by Bach, Debussy and Handel, less familiar pieces by Alvars and Piazzolla, and her own Celtic Concerto, a contemporary classic. Two of Bristol’s most established professional musicians, Roger Huckle and William Goodchild are co-directors of the concert and are this evening’s leader and conductor of Bristol Ensemble.  Bristol Ensemble opens with Poldark Suite, which intricately expresses the sweeping and mysterious Cornish landscape. Later, expect moments of originality and quirkish humour in Max Richter’s re-composition of Vivaldi’s Summer Concerto from The Four Seasons. The exquisite Delkiow Sivy, based on the oldest Cornish folk song, is a new commission by Truro based composer, Russell Pascoe.   In celebration of Welsh song, Côr y Gleison presents an eclectic blend of traditional and contemporary choral music that is uplifting and joyous, nostalgic and poignant. In a change of tone and tempo, the Ilminster Avenue E-Act Primary Academy choir with special guest Steve Knightley will regale us with folk songs and shanties of West Cornwall Bristol Cathedral, Bristol DD/MM/YYYY
