Programme Note

In Latin America, singing and dance is at the centre of the celebration of Christmas. It is midsummer there, and the people begin to sing, dance, and play instruments for the entire twelve days of Christmas in front of the crib. The focus of celebration is the crib, with the sleeping baby Jesus, his mother Mary, the shepherds, the three kings, and the animals. The different ethnicities intermingle, and the music combines indigenous native traditions with the influences of those who came from elsewhere, Africa and Europe.

Songs are in Spanish, and also in traditional local languages such as Guarani, Quichua and Nahautl. Our ensemble is international and multi-ethnic symbolizing the different influences that flow together through this delightful music.
