Programme Note

Burford Orchestra’s autumn concert on 23 November at Burford School entirely features music from Great Britain and includes some of our island’s most famous composers. The first half journeys around our shores, with Cheltenham-based Gustav Holst’s Somerset Rhapsody cleverly interweaving traditional folks songs from the west country and Hamish MacCunn’s Land of the Mountain and Flood evoking moods and landscapes of his native Scotland. These are juxtaposed with Malcolm Arnold’s Peterloo Overture which dramatically depicts the events of the Peterloo Massacre, which occurred in Manchester 200 years ago. After the interval, the orchestra turns to a composer who needs no introduction, Edward Elgar, and his enduringly popular Enigma Variations.
