Programme Note

This long-established duo presents an attractive and accessible programme of art songs in English from the first eight decades of the twentieth century.

It features composers William Alwyn, George Butterworth, Samuel Barber, Rebecca Clarke and Ivor Gurney, setting poets including Yeats, Housman, Masefield and Edward Thomas.

The earliest works in the programme are George Butterworth's 'Six Songs from A Shropshire Lad' and the latest, William Alwyn's 'Mirages' and Samuel Barber's Op. 45 nos 1-3, were first performed in 1974. The Ivor Gurney settings of three poems by Edward Thomas were composed within six years of the poet's death in action on 9 April 1917.
