Programme Note
As much a Christmas tradition as mince pies and holly wreaths, Handel’s Messiah is the musical essential of the festive season. Armonico Consort’s critically-acclaimed choir and baroque players, currently celebrating their 20th anniversary, offer a chance to hear the work as it was in Handel’s time, performing on instruments of the period.
They’re joined by a line-up of exceptional soloists including internationally-renowned countertenor Iestyn Davies, directed by Christopher Monks.
Messiah is Handel’s best-known oratorio, and with good reason: it contains some of his greatest tunes, rousing choruses and attractive arias including ‘For Unto Us a Child is Born’, ‘The Trumpet Shall Sound’ and ‘Ev’ry Valley Shall be Exalted’, as well as the famous ‘Hallelujah!’ chorus.
