Programme Note
Armonico Consort and young people from its AC Academy choirs join forces for Carl Orff’s magnificent Carmina Burana. Written in the 1930s, Orff described Carmina Burana as a ‘scenic cantata’ made up of “secular songs for soloists and choruses, accompanied by instruments and magic images”. Opening with the famous chorus ‘O Fortuna’, Orff sets 24 medieval poems on topics as diverse as gluttony, gambling and lust, the joys of Spring and the fickleness of fortune. The huge choral and orchestral forces, which include two pianos and an extra large percussion section, are made up of Armonico Consort’s top professional singers and orchestra with hundreds of young voices from its Coventry and Warwick AC Academy choirs.
