Programme Note
Karl Jenkins’s The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace has been described by Classic FM as “the nation’s favourite piece of contemporary music” and is never far from the top of their annual Hall of Fame.
On the eve of Armistice Day, Armonico Consort’s superb choir and orchestra, directed by Christopher Monks, will give a powerful rendition of the work which Jenkins wrote in 2000 and dedicated to the victims of the Kosovo conflict.
They will be joined by 400 local children from their AC Academy choirs in the region, helping to recreate the piece as it was initially intended by the composer.
Different religions and cultures form the inspiration for the work: the Muslim call to prayer, war poetry and Japanese haiku sit alongside texts from the traditional mass.
Its captivating Benedictus, brooding Sanctus and heavenly choral accompaniment have entranced audiences and choral societies ever since and The Armed Man continues to convey a powerful message for world peace.
