Programme Note

Twickenham Choral is a friendly, ambitious and thriving choir of over 100 voices drawing singers of all ages from a wide area of West London, including Richmond and Kingston as well as Twickenham. Exactly 100 years from their first public performance, singing this very piece, they are kicking off their Centenary celebrations with Mendelssohn's ever-popular tour de force.

Never out of fashion, this intense, operatic Biblical oratorio vividly depicts Elijah's confrontations with the priests of Baal, King Ahab, Queen Jezebel and even God himself, climaxing with his ascent to heaven in a fiery horse-drawn chariot. For imaginative orchestration, flamboyant characterisation, dramatic impetus and sheer beauty of the music, Elijah is justifiably an absolute favourite of the choral repertoire for singers and audience alike.
