Programme Note
Most people love Mozart and his Requiem is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding and memorable oratorio works ever written, or nearly written as the case may be. Mozart famously died during the composition process (although the work was latterly completed by a variety of other composers) and the spirit of the dying man lives through this work: brilliant, vivacious, at peace yet fearful of what was to come. The Dixit Dominus by Marianna Martines is less well known but a wonderfully buoyant setting of the work. Marianna was an eminent contemporary of Mozart’s with whom he often played piano duets at parties. The programme is rounded off with Mozart’s spirited settings of the Marian antiphon Regina Caeli and Divertimento in D for strings.
We hope you will join us for what should be an exciting evening of wonderful music. We anticipate it will be a popular concert, so book soon to avoid disappointment!
