Programme Note
Whitehall Choir and Constanza Chorus, two of London’s most engaging choirs, join together for this baroque extravaganza. Prepare for the roof to be raised by these combined forces in rousing performances of Handel‘s Coronation Anthem, Zadok the Priest and Vivaldi‘s setting of Dixit Dominus for double choir and orchestra.
The rhythmic energy and vibrancy of Isabella Leonarda‘s short setting of Dixit Dominus is reminiscent of Monteverdi. Born in Italy in 1620, Leonarda was a prolific composer who joined a convent at 16 and remained there for the rest of her life where it is likely she wrote most of the sacred music for all performances while maintaining her duties as nun and eventually, Mother Superior.
Written on a grand scale for a large baroque orchestra, chorus and five soloists, Bach‘s Magnificat in D major is one of the best-loved choral works.
The choirs are joined by some of the UK’s top professional baroque instrumentalists from the period ensemble London Baroque Sinfonia and a lineup of superb soloists in a performance not to be missed!
