Following the success of her recent Beethoven cycle, French pianist Elizabeth Sombart returns to Cadogan Hall to play four of these sublime masterpieces over two Sunday afternoon concerts with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Impassioned and brooding, the first movement of Concerto No 20 in D minor provides an emotional blueprint for the chilling denouement of Don Giovanni. An extraordinary Romanze creates the tantalising impression of smiling through tears, followed by a storm-tossed finale and, ultimately, an effervescent, upbeat ending. By contrast, Concerto No 21 in C major is distinctly celebratory in character. The glowing Andante movement in particular is greatly loved, immortalised by its evocative use in film soundtracks.
