Programme Note
Roberto Devereux (1837) is one of the finest of the brilliant series of operas that Donizetti wrote for Naples in the 1830s. The librettist was his regular Neapolitan collaborator, Salvadore Cammarano, who had written Lucia di Lammermoor for Donizetti in 1835 and would later write Il trovatore for Verdi.
Inspired by events in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, Cammarano created a drama that is historically inaccurate but full of emotional power. His characterisation of the queen, in particular, is a compelling portrait of conflicting love and duty and one of the great roles in the bel canto repertory.
The conductor is Gary Matthewman and the international cast includes Helena Dix as Elizabetta, Christopher Turner as Roberto Devereux, Catherine Carby as the Duchess of Nottingham, Julien Van Mellaerts as the Duke of Nottingham, James Platt (Sir Gualtiero Raleigh) and Stephen Aviss (Lord Cecil), with the Chelsea Opera Group Orchestra and Chorus.
The opera will be sung in Italian with English surtitles. The performance will last 2 hours 30 minutes including one interval.
