Add to my Calendar 09-07-2016 19:30 09-07-2016 21:30 36 Milestones The Addison Oratorio Choir tackle a completely new challenge for their summer concert on July 9th and joins the East London Brass Band at the Cadogan Hall, for an exciting and unusual programme of music for choir and brass. The first half of the concert will see the band demonstrate their virtuosity and will include the world premiere of the 2nd Tuba Concerto by Derek Bourgeois, programmed to celebrate the composers 75th birthday.   The concert will end with the ‘Sea Songs Suite’, an imaginative treatment by Gordon Jacob of the ‘Sea Songs’ arranged by Henry Wood and heard every year at the Last Night of the Proms. We will also celebrate another major anniversary, the 90th birthday of the Austrian-British composer Joseph Horovitz, by giving a rare performance of his dramatic Oratorio ‘Samson’, written in 1977. The piece (with a text by Chris Judge-Smith), tells the well-known Bible story of Samson, held captive in Gaza, his love for Delilah and, as the crowd yells abuse and makes fun of his blindness, Samson’s final destruction of the temple, as he dies with his enemies in a final demonstration of his divine power.  Horovitz demonstrates why his music is central to the brass/wind repertoire world-wide and why he is such an acclaimed composer for stage and television,  providing music that is both direct and thrillingly powerful. The final climax, though shattering, will hopefully leave the walls of the Cadogan Hall still standing. It promises to be a thrilling evening! Cadogan Hall, London DD/MM/YYYY
