Programme Note
Featuring an impressive cast and accompanied by a large live orchestra with over 30 musicians.
After last yearâs season of successful performances of Carmen and La Traviata, the Russian State Ballet and Opera House is back with another world-class opera, Rigoletto – a tragic tale of misunderstanding, revenge and sacrifice.
Rigoletto is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi, set to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, and based on the play Le Roi s’amuse by Victor Hugo. Its tragic story revolves around the hunchbacked court jester, Rigoletto, his beautiful daughter Gilda he loves (but had kept secret from the Court) and the Duke of Mantua he serves.
Rigoletto’s sarcastic comments and participation in the Dukeâs escapades have won him many enemies among the Duke’s followers. Court Monterone, furious that his family has been shamed by the Dukeâs seduction of his daughter, ruins the jolly party and is arrested, cursing the Duke and Rigoletto, to the hunchbackâs secret horror. Ceprano, another courtier, not amused by Rigolettoâs humiliations and thinking that Gilda is Rigolettoâs mistress, plots a more direct revenge and persuades his followers to kidnap Gilda and take her to the Duke. Rigoletto goes to his daughterâs rescue. The nobles mock Rigoletto for his troubles. After comforting his daughter, Rigoletto vows vengeance on the Duke and hires a hitman. The curse comes to fruition when Gilda falls in love with the Duke and eventually sacrifices her life to save him from the assassins hired by her father.
Rigoletto is one of Verdi’s best-loved masterpieces, and is considered as standard repertoire. The opera includes the Duke’s much loved cynical aria La donna e mobile.
This is an opportunity for opera lovers to see Rigoletto as never before with an established and long standing Russian theatre that continues to grow on the international stage and wins awards in the field of opera and ballet.
Sung in Italian with English surtitles.
