Programme Note

"Artistic Director Matthew Shiel shone" (⭐⭐⭐⭐ThisWeek Culture)

Get ready for a spooktacular night as the Edinburgh Philharmonic Orchestra takes the stage for a bone-chilling Halloween concert inspired by Alfred Hitchcock and his iconic horror film Psycho (1959) with a thrilling orchestral suite adapted and arranged for orchestra by its film composer Bernard Herrman.

Tonight's programme also features two of the most horrifying pieces in the classical music repertoire: Anton Webern's Movement V and Beethoven's Funeral March.

Beethoven's funeral march is often played at at notable state funerals, memorial services, and commemorations (including American Presidents J.F. Kennedy and Franklin D. Roosevelt). Meanwhile, Webern's radical use of atonal and twelve-tone techniques provides a chilling and unsettling atmosphere for our musical celebration of Halloween.
