Programme Note

As part of the Freedom City celebrations, we are delighted to present a programme of music inspired by the life of Dr Martin Luther King Jr.

We bring together works from prominent African-American composers William Grant Still and Adolphus Hailstork with more widely played classics by Aaron Copland (Fanfare for the Common Man) and Duke Ellington (Three Black Kings).

Joining the orchestra to feature as narrator in Copland’s Lincoln Portrait will be MP for Newcastle Central, Chi Onwurah.
