Programme Note
The Spectre's Bride (Dvorak)
For soloists, choir and orchestra
The New Tyneside Orchestra is delighted to be joined by Ars Cantata Zurich for this performance as part of a cultural exchange.
A girl prays for the return of her bridegroom who has been gone for three years. That night he knocks on her window and asks her to follow him to their marital home. She obeys, not realising that he is no longer among the living.
There follows an unpleasant trip through forest and across moors accompanied by a howling wind and the cries of dogs, crows, toads, and birds of prey. The bridegroom takes the bride's prayer book, rosary, and cross from her. 'Home' is the cemetery - the bride flees into the mortuary and locks the door. Outside and inside the dead are moving and the bridegroom demands to be let in. The bride prays and prays; at dawn everything is quiet, the bridegroom gone, and the girl is saved.
The New Tyneside Orchestra is delighted to be joined by Ars Cantata Zurich for this performance. We will then travel to Zurich the following weekend for a performance in the city.
Please note that online ticket sales may close the day before the performance but tickets will still be available on the door.
