The City Musick
Programme Note
Featuring the exotic wind and brass instruments of The City Musick, this most unusual event presents multi-choir works from the 'Colossal Baroque' of seventeenth-century Rome: four-choir music by Benevoli (with four more doubling choirs!), his Venetian teacher Ugolini and others. The music features a curious technique called 'reining in the donkey' in which lower parts move hastily underneath a static soprano line, supposedly like a priest sitting on and trying to hold back a frenetic donkey (think 'King of Kings' in the Halleluiah chorus).
