Programme Note

“The Dream of Gerontius” is widely regarded as Elgar's finest choral work.  Composed for the Birmingham Music Festival of 1900 using words from a poem by Cardinal Newman, this magnificent and deeply felt two-part oratorio relays the journey of a pious man's soul from his deathbed to his judgment before God and settling into Purgatory.  David Crown will conduct Cheltenham Bach Choir, the vOx Chamber Choir from Oxford and the Regency Sinfonia, joined by superb soloists Joshua Ellicott as Gerontius, Catherine Carby as the Angel and Gary Griffiths as the Angel of the Agony.  This promises to be a moving and uplifting concert – not to be missed!
