Programme Note
Christopher Herrick's return to Chester Cathedral features the stupendous work by Julius Reubke, the Sonata on the 94th Psalm, one of the greatest organ works in the classical repertoire. On the basis of his two surviving works, Reubke was potentially one of the greatest German composers of the 19th century. Tragically, he died in his early 20s, and one can only wonder what kind of music he might have written had he lived on.
The concert begins with the Toccata in B minor by Eugène Gigout, a short, thrilling and riotous musical journey, followed by Pièce d'Orgue (BWV 572) by JS Bach, a fantasia in 3 parts from his colossal oeuvre of organ works.
Christopher Herrick's illustrious musical career started when he was a boy, singing in the 1953 coronation in Westminster Abbey. He was an organ scholar at Oxford, was organist at St Paul's Cathedral, then 10 years at the Abbey before forging a career as a concert organist during which time he has performed and recorded great and small organs all over the world. This has included two complete Bach cycles, one in New York and one in St Petersburg, Russia. The complete organ works of Bach and Buxtehude were recorded for Hyperion Records and the organ sonatas of Alexandre Guilmant for the BBC.
