Programme Note
It is 200 years since the Peterloo Massacre when 18 protesters were slaughtered and over 400 were injured by a cavalry charge of the Manchester and Salford Yeomanry. Arnold’s overture commemorates the event in music whilst Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique is the first in our theme for the season of “Fable and Fantasy”.
Ralph Vaughan Williams tuba concerto, composed in 1954, will be heard this evening performed by international artist Les Neish. Les has toured the world performing in over 60 countries and is Tuba Tutor at the RNCM, Salford University and Birmingham Conservatoire
Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique like the Peterloo Overture depicts a story. “The Artist” (Berlioz himself) falls in love but is unable to confess his love to the object of his desire. Everywhere he looks he sees visions of his loved one. He is an opium addict and suffers from hallucinations which are depicted in the March to the Scaffold and Witches Dance. As Bernstein said, "Berlioz tells it like it is. You take a trip, you wind up screaming at your own funeral”.
