Programme Note

This concert features the outstanding young British cellist, MARIATU KANNEH MASON, whose musical sensitivity and depth of expression have already earned her a growing reputation on the UK concert stage. A member of the remarkable Kanneh-Mason family- described by Simon Cowell as " the most talented family in the world"- Mariatu has developed her own distinctive voice as a performer, combining technical assurance with a thoughtful, expressive approach to music making.

She will perform Elgar's cello concerto, one of the most profound and emotionally resonant works in the cello repetoire. Written in the shadow of the First World War, the concerto speaks with intimacy, restraint and deep lyricism, requiring a soloist of great musical maturity. Mariatu's interpretation brings clarity and warmth to the work, making it an ideal centrepiece for this concert in the atmospheric setting of Chester Cathedral.

The programme opens with Weber's exhilarating Der Freischutz Overture and concludes with Beethoven's revolutionary Symphony No 3- Eroica-a landmark work that reshaped the symphony and still thrills audiences today with its scale and ambition.
