Programme Note
This year, we are celebrating Ralph Vaughan Williams's 150th anniversary - renowned composer, Royal College of Music alumnus and professor. His legacy is more than just genial music, but an important cultural mark left in British History. To honour Vaughan Williams, current RCM students are performing his Oboe Concerto written in 1943-44, dedicated to Léon Goossens, alongside F. Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream and W. A. Mozart's 40th symphony. Alex Franklin, British oboist, is the guest soloist for this programme, showing the concerto's beautiful and exciting themes with his thrilling and gifted playing.
Vaughan Williams 150 - The Chamber Orchestra Project was created by Patricia Khachkalyan Gomes, conductor and artistic director of the project. This concert is kindly supported by the Islington Festival of Music and Art (founders Martin André and Joana Ly), The Oboe Shop - Crowthers of Canterbury and Christ Church Highbury.
