Programme Note
Despite announcing his retirement months earlier, Brahms wrote his meltingly beautiful clarinet quintet after hearing the playing of clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld, to whom the work is dedicated. Brahms calls on classical structures but the piece is visionary in the way the thematic material is developed. Equally experimental is Haydn’s String Quartet Op.54 No.1, one of the ‘Tost’ quartets in which the composer explored new forms, new ways to employ combinations of instruments within the ensemble, and new harmonies.
